THINKING OUT LOUD!

WEDNESDAYS 9AM

WEDDING BANDS

Did you know? "Egyptians believed that there was a vein in the fourth finger, known as the lover's vein, that was connected to the heart, an untrue theory that Romans also came to believe many years later. To signify that {if} a man had a hold of a woman's heart, he would follow the gospel of Beyoncé and put a ring on it, a practice that lives on today." - as culled from my online research. It still leaves me wondering who started it all. I mean, whoever came up with that idea? What was going on in their mind while they conceived such an idea? Did they consult anybody? Was it their plan all along that every married individual must wear it on that same finger? Or, perhaps, they just flowed and other people got in the groove and that became good old known tradition, cum the 'right' way to wear it? Why is my thought loud on this?
Just the other day, my married friend and I were at a wedding; this friend is a lot like me when it comes to doing things differently. She wears her wedding band on her digitus secundus manus, that is, her fore/index/pointer finger y'all. Some guy approached her and began some live sermon, so she flashed her 'ring' finger to him but he seemed not to get the message. Tired of 'minding' my  business, I spelt it out to him:
"She's a man's treasure already dude; wedding rings and all"
But then my guy looked at me like I just spoke a strange tongue (lol). After his brain was done processing the information, he asked kinda dumbly: "Is that your wedding ring?"
Hahahahahahaha! I mean, can you imagine that?! Hahahaha hahahaha!!!!!!!!! Anyways, he is not the first or only one to be rudely shocked by my friend's 'difference'. So many people react differently to her insistence not to follow the norm. Reactions ranging from the cited guy's dumbness, to shock and admiration, or mortification (this group follows up with preaching why it should be done the "right" way), and back to dumbness. All these make me wanna wear mine in, say, maybe my pollex, or my digitus minimus manus - Uh uh! I'm not explaining that, go find it out yourself.

THINKING OUT LOUD!

WEDNESDAYS 9AM

What shall it Profit?

A fruit seller should be wise, and if they lack wisdom, should ask for it from whatever deity they believe in to grant it them, because wisdom is proFRUitable. Fruits are perishable goods that do not need to stay long before becoming unusable and needing to be disposed, but it'd shock you when you go to buy them from the vendors and they send your two heels matching faster away from their stand with the exorbitant price tags they've given to the fruits.
So, the other day, a colleague stopped by a mango seller's stand to buy some mangoes. The woman insisted on selling one mango for fifty Naira, two for hundred. All our pleading cum preaching to get her to sell, at least three for hundred Naira to us, fell on deaf ears. My colleague went ahead to purchase #500 worth of mangoes, as against the #1000 she had in mind to buy; she had to get oranges to make up for the quantity. You see, she was going to visit someone at the hospital, whose favourite fruit happened to be mangoes.
Some days later, on my way to work, I saw the same mango seller disposing off some now rotten mangoes and I was forced to wonder what she gained by refusing to sell those mangoes to us, whilst they were still fresh. She would have gained more money and had less waste. Now, fruit and money, had she none and what had it proFRUited her to hoard all that fruit and have them go to waste later?  Someone may be led to argue the fact that she has to make gain by selling above the price she bought, plus the transportation and so on and so forth. That to me, is lack of wisdom; gaining some to loose All. I'd rather loose some to gain all.

THINKING OUT LOUD!

SUNDAYS 2PM

 JUST SAY "SORRY"!!

Children in the basic classes are taught that there are three magic words:
1) Please
2) I am sorry
3) Thank you.
So long, so many people seem to have a problem getting these magic words through their oratory organ - don't ask me if I mean the mouth, of course I mean the mouth (lol). I was saying, a lot of people cannot seem to produce those words when they are most needed, especially the second word, " I am sorry". Yeah! Come on you can say it; "I am sorry". See? That didn't hurt, did it? I wonder why some persons make it seem like they are going to choke, or worse, die, if they let "I am sorry" come out of them. Why?! It's not like pride is a virtue, so why hold so tenaciously to it? If you got there a second later, when the simple issue turned to a witness centre, you wouldn't believe the story that started it all.
The lady, who, at a glance, was obviously not used to street life, was walking "jejely" along the already crowded sidewalk, when this guy appeared from no where, brushing past her in the most reckless manner you ever saw. Moved by the roughness of such contact, she swayed and would have fallen, were it not for the guy beside her who quickly caught her. I know an upcoming drama once it's about to begin. This was no different. The hero/rescuer, now done with his duty, ran to catch up with the villain, who never bothered to care what happened to the lady he nearly knocked over. Hero drags villain back to the scene of action, all the way villain curses and declares why he shouldn't be bothered.
Hero: "oya say sorry."
Villain: "ah! Wetin make her dey waka for road like say na her papa geh road? she no see say people full the road, she just block everywhere.."
On and on he went, saying everything , except the words he was instructed to say. Well, it turned out, hero guy was a soilder and  the fragile lady's bodyguard. I will not bore you with how Mr Villain was reduced to a pleading, respect-filled individual all in the space of 290 seconds. All that drama would have been averted, had he just produced the three worded sentence, "I am sorry". Had he done that when he quacked the lady at first, he would not have had to beg or plead like a common criminal at the end. If you are one of such people, who feel your value might depreciate when you use those magic words, please be better guided; your value might appreciate instead. I'm not here to advice anybody though, I'm just thinking out loud.
